Quantum Block of Sigulda State Gymnasium has been opened 03.09.2019
On 2 September, the natural sciences and mathematics teaching block (the Quantum Block) of Sigulda State Gymnasium at 7 Ata Kronvalda Street was completed. A total of 511 pupils are starting their school days in the new building. Combination with the existing school building and the Sigulda Sports Centre built by MONUM has resulted in a complex – a modern sports and education quarter.
The space measuring more than 3,000 square metres on four floors offers eleven classrooms with laboratories and auxiliary rooms, as well as a multimedia auditorium and an information centre equipped with a digital library. The Quantum Block also includes an assembly hall, premises for school staff, a lift and a spacious dining hall.
When designing the new extension, consideration was given to the convenience of the pupils and teachers: the classrooms face south to provide sufficient natural light during school hours, while public spaces have been built on the other side of the building. The new block is equipped with modern lighting, ventilation and heat supply systems, which in the long run will help reduce the operating costs of the building.
The Quantum Block, combined with the existing school building, forms an inner courtyard shaped as a semicircle – like an amphitheatre that is spatially open in all directions. “We are currently actively working on the redevelopment of the existing school building, which was built in 1960. As a result, the gymnasium will transform into a contemporary environment where pupils can collaborate, research, explore and develop,” says Rita Markova – Gavrilova, Project Manager at MONUM.
Total project cost: EUR 12 million. It is due for completion in the summer of 2020.
